JASPER

Jasper is not yet ready for adoption, as he is currently healing from fractures he suffered when he was hit by a car prior to coming into rescue.  He recently had an excellent visit with the veterinarian, who declared that Jasper's healing is progressing very well.  We expect Jasper to be available for adoption in September.

He is 1.5 years old, his coloring is salt and pepper and he has natural ears and a docked tail.  He is a very sweet boy, we recognized that right away. Jasper listens well and is good with other dogs, with cats, and with kids.  He really gets along well with everyone!  He is a very dear little dog.

Once he has healed, he will be looking for a very special home, one that includes a fenced-in yard.

If you are interested in adopting Jasper, please submit your application.  He won't be available to leave his foster home until September, but we are now accepting applications.

ANNIE

Annie is an 8-month-old terrier mix. She weighs about 25 pounds and her coat is black with some silver. She has a very endearing tail, which is curly and arches over her back. You can see it in the  picture below.  Unfortunately, her foster sister tried to steal the show by stepping into the photo!

She is very sweet and loves to lie near her foster mom on the sofa, have her coat brushed, "stalk and attack" her stuffed animals, play gentle tug-of-war, and she loves to run and play outside.  She's very curious, intelligent, and active, and just has to be part of everything going on around her.  She's not a couch potato and wouldn't like to live with one either.

Annies' social skills and obedience training are lacking a bit, but she is a young dog and seems very smart, so learning should not be a problem for her.  Her foster mom is working on her house and leash training and predicts that Annie will learn these skills quickly.  It's not Annie's fault that no one took the time to teach her the things she needs to know, so don't hold that against her.

She has been in her foster home for only a few days, and when she first arrived she was very unsure of her surroundings and so enjoyed the comfort of her crate.  In a short time, she has greatly reduced the time she spends in her crate and is enjoying socializing more and more.  She tends to be a little shy around other dogs but will approach them in her own time, and is then fine

Any children in Annie's future home should be over the age of 12.  Also, Annie and her new owner(s) will need to attend basic and perhaps advanced obedience classes.  Annie needs to learn to follow her leader, this is not an unusual situation for a terrier who was not trained during it's first year.  And, Annie is active and will do best in a home where she can get the activity and exercise she so desires.

Annie is not yet available for adoption, as she has not been with us long enough for us to fully evaluate her needs.  If you are interested in Annie, please submit an application and we will do our best to make her available as quickly as we can.

Annie is up to date on her immunizations and is spayed.

ZEKE

Zeke arrived to one our foster homes on 8/19, and we are still evaluating him.  He is doing well and is loving and frequently seeking attention and seems to like the company of the other dogs and cuddles on the sofa with his foster mom.  He is playing with toys and exploring the house and yard.  He has a really wide smile and loves to show it!

He is a large miniature schnauzer who could stand to lose a few pounds.  He is 2 years old.

His owner made the difficult decision to re-home him because of family issues, and an inability to give Zeke the attention and care he deserves.  He is neutered but his previous owner had fallen behind in his medical care.  He is scheduled to be seen by our vet to be heartworm and Lyme tested and to catch up on his shots.

We'll update his profile as his foster mom proceeds with temperament testing.  He is not presently available for adoption, but we will accept applications and hold them for when he does become available, which should be before too long.

PUPPY MILL RESCUES

On December 30, we accepted 4 Miniature Schnauzers from a puppy mill rescue.  These three females and one male are 3-4 years old and are all very sweet.  They are slowly coming out of their shells and the male has been adopted.

They are spayed/neutered and up to date on their vaccines. The three girls have juvenile cataracts, but still have their sight and get around just fine.

They all get along well with other dogs and also with cats and seem fine with their foster mom's children, who are over the age of 10.

LAYLA

.

Layla is 3 years old, salt and pepper with a docked tail and natural ears.

She is a little doll who loves and is always looking for attention.  She is wonderful with other dogs, with cats and with kids over the age of 10.  She is doing very well with her house and crate training.  She does have the beginnings of juvenile cataracts, but that does not stop her at all.  Her vision is still fine.

4/2/2010 Update:  Layla is turning into a social butterfly.  Her foster mom had company over, and Layla wanted to be right in the middle of it all and receive lots of attention along with the other dogs.  It does take her a few minutes to warm up to you, but once she does, she is a complete love and full of kisses.

She loves to sit in your lap while you watch TV and also follow you around the house.  Even with her limited vision, she does very well getting around the house on her own.  She would do best in a home with another dog, as she does enjoy having a canine companion.

HALEY

Haley is three years old,  salt and pepper with a docked tail and natural ears.

She is a very sweet-natured girl who just wants to please.  She is coming out of her shell more and more each day, it is great fun to watch her blossoming into the dog she will become.  She will seek you out to ask for attention.  She is wonderful with other dogs, with cats and with kids over the age of 10.  She also has the beginnings of juvenile cataracts, but this doesn't stop her at all, she easily gets around every where she goes.  She is learning her house and crate training skills very well.

4/2/2010 Update:  Haley's social skills are slowly improving, and she is very sweet and loving.  Once she gets to you know, she will be your constant shadow.  She loves to sit on the couch with you while you watch TV.  She will do best in a home with another dog, as she does enjoy having a caning companions.  Haley is patiently waiting for her forever home.

LUCY

Lucy is  a 3 years old salt and pepper with natural ears and a docked tail.

6/5 Update:  Lucy is very slowly getting braver and braver.  More often now she will approach her foster Mom, especially if food is involved.

And, look who went camping during Memorial Day weekend!

She went on her first leash walks and appeared to enjoy them very much.  She learned her way around the camper home very quickly and did surprisingly well on her first vacation.  Her foster mom is so very proud of her!

We have discovered that Lucy is nearly totally blind.  In spite of that, she continues to make small strides in her foster home.

7/26/2010 Update--Lucy has under gone the surgery to restore her sight.  The surgeon believes that Lucy has been blind from very early in her life, so is now seeing for the first time.  Although she is still recovering from the surgery, she is showing great interest in all that she can now see.  We believe that restoring her sight will allow her to recover from her life in the puppy mill.

A veterinarian   generously donated her services free of charge, however our expenses for Lucy's surgery exceed $2000 and has pretty much drained our limited bank balance.  We desperately need donors to help with Lucy's surgery.  PLEASE send any amount you can.  Donations may be mailed to Schnauzer Paws Rescue, P.O. Box 493, Ware, MA  01082.  Please indicate that your donation is for "Lucy."  If donations exceed the cost of Lucy's surgery and after care, the excess will be used to start a fund so that Layla and Haley may also receive the gift of perfect sight.

Due to the surgery and after care, she is not available for adoption at this time.  Please check back in, though, as we will post frequent updates.

BONNIE AND CLYDE
BONDED PAIR

.
Bonnie and Clyde are 11 years old.  They ended up in a shelter when their owner went into a nursing home.  They did not do well in that scary, loud, cement environment, and a month ago Clyde suffered a severe injury to his leg when another dog at the shelter grabbed it.  The leg has had surgery and it is healing very well.  There may be some loss of function, but even with pins in, he can take a lively walk.  They are housebroken, have great house manners, can be left alone, are excellent car passengers, and love to walk.

They do bark when they think there is something that requires their comments, but in the house are quiet.  Very, very sweet.  Lap snugglers, kissers.  They are living with 5 other dogs now, and require a slow introduction.  Once they see there is no threat, they ignore the other dogs.  When they encounter a cat at the shelter or vet, they show no reaction, so they may be okay living with cats.  Bonnie needs a daily thyroid pill and an Enalapril for a heart murmur.

They absolutely must stay together, they sleep against each other, get courage from each other, and share everything.

They are being fostered in Kent, Connecticut.  Please contact Barbara at 860-927-3420 or sculptaire@snet.net for more information.
